The cyber wake-up call NZ retailers can’t ignore

If you’re in retail in New Zealand, it’s time to take a long, hard look at your cybersecurity.

In March 2025, the James Pascoe Group (JPG) – the iconic Kiwi company behind Farmers, Whitcoulls, Pascoes Jewellers, and Stewart Dawsons – was hit by a serious cyberattack. Systems went down, stores were forced to go cash-only, and even now, the full extent of the breach is still unfolding.

The attackers reportedly encrypted data across the network and left a ransom note for staff to find. It’s the kind of cyber incident that keeps business owners up at night – and rightly so.

Unfortunately, JPG isn’t alone. In recent weeks, international giants like Marks & Spencer, Harrods, and the Co-op supermarket chain in the UK have also been targeted. Retailers are now squarely in the crosshairs of cybercriminals, both here and abroad.

Why Are Retailers Being Targeted?

It’s simple: retailers hold data goldmines – customer info, credit card transactions, loyalty databases. And many Kiwi businesses, especially smaller ones, still treat cybersecurity like an IT issue rather than a boardroom one.

The truth is, cybercriminals are organised, well-funded, and constantly probing for weak spots. If you’ve got an online store, a payment terminal, or even just an email address, you’re on their radar.

Four Things Retailers Should Do Right Now

Here’s how to build your cyber resilience without blowing the budget:

Audit Your Risk
Know where your vulnerabilities are. That means looking at your systems, staff access, suppliers, and even your Wi-Fi setup.

Train Your People
Most attacks start with human error—clicking dodgy links or falling for scams. Regular staff training is your frontline defence.

Have a Response Plan
What would you do if your tills stopped working tomorrow? Having a tested incident response plan is critical to keeping the doors open.

Don’t DIY It
Cybersecurity isn’t something to figure out after the fact. Get help from someone who speaks plain English and can guide you through what matters most.
