While large organisations ramp up their defences, SMEs, which form the backbone of New Zealand’s economy, are falling behind. High costs and a lack of cybersecurity expertise leave SMEs vulnerable. Shockingly, only 14% of IT Managed Service Provider (MSP) clients adopt a full security suite, despite escalating threats.
The MSP perspective: A tough love approach
MSPs are increasingly enforcing mandatory cybersecurity standards. Seventy-one percent require a minimum-security package, and some refuse service to clients who don’t comply. This hardline stance is about more than protection; it’s a call for accountability.
Shared responsibility: More than just tech
Cyber resilience isn’t just about technology; it’s a trifecta of people, processes, and technology. SMEs often misjudge MSPs’ roles, delegating responsibility entirely instead of collaborating. Without active participation from businesses – like regular security assessments and staff training – true cyber resilience remains a pipe dream.

The report stresses the need for education and partnerships. MSPs must educate clients, while SMEs need to prioritise cybersecurity in their budgets (yes, even above the coffee fund!). Together, they can create a resilient digital ecosystem.
